According to the current Acquisitions Policy:
The National Football Museum aims to portray all aspects of football. The collections cover the experiences of clubs, players, officials, supporters and all concerned with the game at different levels. England, as the birthplace from which modern football has spread to the rest of the world, is the focus for collecting. The museum will continue to explore football's development from the early ball games played around the world, through to the beginnings of the professional game in England, and football's subsequent global popularity. The collecting focus shall be on the social history of football, but will also look at football's relationship with other relevant subjects such as science, technology, art and the media.
The museum particularly welcomes offers of material from the public that are accompanied by well-documented personal stories. The Museum cannot accept long-term loans other than for exceptional items. The Museum can only purchase items through appeals to national grant bodies.
The museum follows strict procedures and ethical guidelines set by the Museums Association when accepting items as gifts or on loan. This includes providing the donor / lender with a written, signed receipt and an agreed condition report and valuation.
