Albert Scanlon one of 'Busby Babes', dies

All at the museum were saddened to hear of the death of Albert Scanlon, one of the ‘Busby Babes’.

He made his debut for Manchester United’s first team in 1954 at the age of 19 and was one of the survivors of the ill fated  Munich air crash, which followed the team’s European Cup match against Red Star Belgrade in 1958.  He went on to feature in all 42 league games for United the following season, scoring 16 goals to help them finish as runners-up in the league.  After leaving the club in 1960, he went on to play for Newcastle, Mansfield and Lincoln.

Earlier this year the Busby Babes were inducted into the National Football Museum’s Hall of Fame event at Manchester’s Hilton Hotel and Mr Scanlon attended alongside his team mates, Alex Dawson and Ron Cope.

Kevin Moore, National Football Museum Director, said 'Albert Scanlon played an important role in one of the greatest football teams ever. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this sad time’.
