Action Packed 'Tom Finney Day' at Museum

People turned out in style for the recent launch of the Museum’s new exhibition, Local Hero: Football Legend, Sir Tom Finney.  A gathering of VIP guests saw ex Preston and Liverpool defender and BBC pundit Mark Lawrenson, formally open the exhibition, which pays tribute  to the genius of Sir Tom, one of England’s greatest ever footballers.  

Earlier in the day local schools turned up for ‘Tom Finney Day’ and took part in all things Tom Finney, including meeting a 1950’s Tom Finney look-alike and making Tom Finney masks! World Free-Style champion John Farnworth was also on hand to show off his skills and help the children practise some special moves. Sir Tom himself made a special appearance to meet the pupils and present some awards. A few lucky children also managed to get his autograph!

Sir Tom, the Museum’s Vice President was also present for the official opening of the exhibition  He heard Mark Lawrenson pay tribute to a true legend and one of the nicest men he had ever been honoured to meet.  Mark’s words were echoed by Museum Director Kevin Moore and Ian Penrose.  Other guests who turned out to honour the great man included Sir Trevor Brooking, now Director of Football Development at the FA and Museum Vice President, ex Southampton Manager Lawrie McMenemy and Cliff Jones, former Tottenham Hotspur winger and Welsh international.

After the launch many of the guests moved on the the Guild Hall to attend a special Gala Dinner celebration for Sir Tom.

The exhibition Local Hero: Football Legend, Sir Tom Finney is now open at the museum. Admission is Free.
