Saved for the Nation opens at Tullie House
Saved For the Nation, the National Football Museum’s travelling exhibition has just opened at Tullie House, Carlisle.
The exhibition which was opened by Carlisle United Manager, Greg Abbott, is based around the oldest surviving FA Cup, which was ‘saved for the nation’ by David Gold, ex Birmingham City owner, (now chairman of West Ham). Gold purchased the fantastic piece of Victorian silverware, used for the FA Cup between 1896 and 1910, at auction in 2005 and since then the trophy has alternated between being on display at the National Football Museum and travelling around the country. So far the exhibition has appeared at Newcastle, Basingstoke, Leeds, Bolton and even the House of Commons!
The exhibition celebrates the world's oldest and most loved football competition and features objects, film and photographs which tell the story of the FA Cup from its beginnings in the 19th Century to the present day. Visitors can find out how and why the FA Cup was created, discover the great teams, players and goals and learn more about some of the great upsets and famous underdogs in the competition’s history.
Star objects include the Blackpool shirt worn by Sir Stanley Matthews in the 1953 FA Cup Final and the Manchester United shirt worn by George Best during the 1970 FA Cup fifth round tie against Northampton Town, where he scored a record six goals. Edwin Rutherford, Keeper of Social History at Tullie House has given the exhibition some local interest by adding programmes and photographs from Carlisle United.
Greg Abbott said, 'Like everyone who loves football, I know all about the FA Cup’s fantastic history and tradition. Long may it continue.'
Michelle Wiggins, Tullie House’s Audience Development Manager, commented, 'We think this is going to be an incredibly popular exhibition because everyone knows about the magic of the FA Cup, not just football fans.'
The exhibition continues at Tullie House until 11 April. For more information visit www.tulliehouse.co.uk
