Breastfeeding policy

This policy describes how the Museum will create a welcoming and comfortable environment to encourage mothers to breastfeed whilst visiting the National Football Museum.

1.  About this policy

  1. A mother has a legal right to breastfeed her child anywhere she chooses.
  1. This policy makes clear that mothers can feel confident they will be made welcome and comfortable at the Museum.
  1. Breastfeeding works best when mother and baby are both relaxed. By providing a welcoming environment for families we aim to achieve this.
  1. The National Football Museum is a member of Breastfeeding-friendly Manchester, a scheme managed by Manchester City Council to encourage more mothers to breastfeed in public places. https://www.manchester.gov.uk/breastfeedingfriendly

2.  Scope

  • This policy relates to all publically accessible locations within the Museum.
  • The policy relates to all visitors, staff and volunteers.

3.  Aim

To ensure that mothers can breastfeed their child and feel confident they will be made welcome and comfortable whilst visiting the Museum.

4.  Operational steps

We will take the following steps to ensure this policy is implemented:

  • Ensure breastfeeding is welcome in any public area of the Museum.
  • Our staff will support breastfeeding mothers by responding to any reasonable requests within the scope of this policy and provide a warm welcome to mothers and babies.
  • Should another visitor object to breastfeeding, they will be informed of the Museum’s policy supporting breastfeeding in public and a mother’s legal right. Any negative incidents will be managed through our standard processes.
  • A breastfeeding mother will not be asked to move to a private area.
  • We will provide changing facilities and adequate space for pushchairs.
  • All staff will receive a briefing from the Communities Dept about this policy and it will be made available for all staff to read.
  • We will actively seek feedback and use it to help develop procedures to achieve the aim of this policy.
  • As a member of Breastfeeding-Friendly Manchester we will display the window sticker and display the logo on our website in a suitable location.
