This policy describes the National Football Museum’s response to the global climate emergency by minimising the impact of its operation on the environment and in particular its direct carbon emissions.
1. About this policy
- The National Football Museum (NFM) is committed to ensuring its business is conducted with a fundamental care for the environment and recognizes its impact on the environment. This policy gives direction to all those working for and within the Museum on how to achieve this and to ensure that environmental practices are of fundamental importance in its development and management.
- The policy should be read in conjunction with the NFM Carbon Reduction plan 2021-
25 that details the Museum’s ambition and how it will be achieved.
- We will actively promote this policy and the Carbon Reduction Plan to staff, contractors, visitors and stakeholders.
2. Scope
- The policy applies to all who work in and operate within the Museum including: employees, volunteers, contractors, board members and suppliers.
- The NFM will also promote sustainable practise to its visitors encouraging sustainable travel to the Museum and personal responsibility in the reduction of individual carbon footprints.
3. Strategy
- The NFM has created a five-year carbon emissions reduction plan. The plan describes the actions to be taken to reduce the direct carbon emissions of the National Football Museum by 50% by 2025, based on baseline date from 2019/20. These actions will also contribute to our overall goal of achieving “zero carbon” by 2038.
- This ambition mirrors that of Manchester City Council (MCC) who are the building landlord in Manchester and primary grant provider. Further information about MCC’s plans can be found by clicking on the link below:
The working relationship with MCC will be key to the success of this plan in particular investment in the upgrading of inefficient plant and equipment at the Manchester site.
- The Carbon Reduction plan seeks to reduce the NFM’s environmental impact by:
- Making detailed measurements of our performance to establish our Carbon footprint and demonstrate improvements made.
- Working in partnership with MCC as landlord to upgrade and replace inefficient plant and equipment in Manchester.
- Improving how the NFM as a tenant manages building controls to optimise efficiency at both locations.
- Ensuring all staff complete accredited training through the Carbon
Literacy Project. https://carbonliteracy.com/. This training will also form part of the standard induction process for all new staff.
- Gaining accreditation to evidence our success in the projects and actions taken to reduce our environmental impact.
- Working in partnership with other organisations to share best practise and commitment to environmental sustainability e.g. Manchester Arts Sustainability Team (MAST).
- Ensuring that contract tenders include environmental performance expectations so that the Museum works with similarly minded partners.
- Minimising the use of air travel and private vehicles for business use and commuting by encouraging staff to use online meeting tools, public transport, cycling or walking.
- Applying the principles of the UK Waste Hierarchy, ensuring that we generate as little waste as possible, use sustainably sourced products made from recycled materials, and re-use or recycle as much of the waste we generate as possible ensuring that nothing goes to landfill.
- Advocating carbon reduction and encourage our customers and stakeholders to make changes to reduce their own carbon footprint.
