When exhibiting items from goalkeepers, one might expect a museum to showcase a pair of gloves, or perhaps a long-sleeved jersey.
But in this one instance, it is the goalie’s boots that are the most significant item to exhibit.
Towards the end of the 1998-99 campaign, Swindon Town goalkeeper Jimmy Glass was sent on loan to struggling Carlisle United. His third appearance came on the final day of the season, with the U’s requiring a win against Plymouth Argyle to avoid relegation to the Conference.
With the scores tied in stoppage time, Glass went up for a last-gasp corner kick. Scott Dobie’s header was parried out, but only as far as the on-loan stopper, who volleyed home from close range to secure the U’s Football League status.
It may well be the most significant goal scored by a goalkeeper in English football history.
